Hydraulic Presses For Industrial Use - ToolsRUs
Much larger than arbor presses and used for large or industrial-scale metalworking, hydraulic presses are tools used in numerous industries. A hydraulic press relies upon the fundamentals of hydraulics to operate the ram as opposed to the mechanical force generated by a manually operated press. Essentially, the ram is moved by the generating of extreme amounts of pressure within a closed system of hydraulic cylinders.
Hydraulic presses range in size and capability and, depending on these factors, are able to apply anywhere from five to 2000 or more tonnes of force. Stamping, bending, straightening and hydroforming are just a few of the uses for which this tool is suited. Depending on its design configuration, the ram may move from side to side or up and down. Types of presses of this nature include pneumatic, H-frame, C-frame, power and assembly varieties. Just a few of the industrial applications of presses include thinning glass, forming dry ice, crushing automobiles, making powders and making sheet metal.
Assembly, power and pneumatic presses are commonly used in heavy industry for a variety of purposes ranging from hydroforming metallic components to assembling mass-produced objects. In smaller machine shops, H-frame or C-frame presses are commonly used. The frame shapes of these varieties are distinct, which is what gave them their names. Taking up minimal floor space in a smaller shop, these presses are best suited for smaller-scale commercial applications.
The cylinder components of a hydraulic press needn't be incredibly large, even to generate 2000 tonnes of force. Through the principles of hydraulics, oil is pressurized within a closed system involving a master and a slave cylinder, creating energy that is then transferred to the ram which is brought down upon the working object.

Unlike mechanical presses, hydraulic presses deliver full, even force at any point within the range of the stroke or the movement of the ram. This ability is true for all hydraulic presses, no matter what its application. By constrast, a mechanical press such as an arbor press only reaches full force near the end of its downward stroke, so it is somewhat limited. For the most accurate and consistant performance, a hydraulic press is far superior to its mechanical cousin.
