Fresh Water From a Dead Sea
In other parts of the world, a glass of clean water is often a luxury. For example, take the Dead Sea in the southern part of Israel. It is truly an exceptional spot on earth. First, at 1385 feet below sea level, it is the lowest place above water on the earth. Water cannot flow out so only through evaporation can water escape, leaving behind the dissolved salts and minerals brought in by the Jordan River and other tributaries. It is Israel’s and Jordan’s mineral and salt waste deposit.
The Dead Sea is 8.6 times saltier than the oceans, making it the second saltiest body of water on earth. This means it is a 33.7% salt solution. Deeper water is saltier so 300 feet down the salt precipitates to the bottom. The Dead Sea is 42 feet long, 11 miles wide, and 1240 feet deep, making it also the deepest salt lake in the world.
Because of the fact that the mineral laden water escapes only by evaporation, vast stores of potash, bromine, caustic soda, magnesium, and sodium chloride have dissolved in its waters over the last several thousand years. It was estimated that the Dead Sea area holds at least two trillion dollars worth of fertilizer compounds (presently 1.9 billion tons of potash), awaiting extraction. The characteristics that make the Sea dead have certainly contributed to giving the country life.
But the level of water in the Dead Sea is dropping at a present rate of three feet a year. Since 1970, the level has dropped 72 feet. What is the cause of this? The first reason is that very little rain feeds it directly. The northern part of the Sea only gets about 4 inches of rain throughout the year, while the southern section gets about 2 inches. Irrigation and manufacturing in the northern part of the country have dropped the amount of water flowing through the Jordan River by 90%.
The salts are reported to have therapeutic value and are taken out of the Dead Sea and sold for this. Desalination plants in the southern area extract these salts and also provide fresh, clean wate. This loss of water has actually lowered the water table in the country, and this affects the ability of the land to provide enough water for the citizens and, therefore, increases the need to take water from the Jordan.
The entire country has been affected by this drop in water level. For example, it has caused the Dead Sea to change its very shape. The shallow area of the Sea is located in the bottom third. Some believe that the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, mentioned in Genesis, were located in this area. But with the water level dropping, this southern area is drying up and is now the Lisan Peninsula (Arabic for “tongue” because of its shape) has completely separated the northern and southern parts of the Sea.
The Dead Sea has been a great tourist attraction for centuries, and this drop in its level may have an effect on this. It is frankly a healthy place to be because of the increased air pressure, low levels of allergens, high levels of oxygen, and decreased ultra-violet solar radiation.
Presently Israel and Jordan are examining the possibility of a joint project called the “Two Seas Canal". This would involve pumping salt water 125 miles from the Gulf of Aqaba of the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. As the water falls into the Dead Sea, it would generate hydroelectricity and the water would then be desalinated, providing 850 million cubic meters of fresh water a year.
A glass of fresh, clean water is surely something people in the west take for granted. Other nations must go to great trouble to provide it for their people, and often must limit its use so there is enough. Though our western sources of water are at times threatened, when we are wise stewards of what we have, it will continue to provide us with this miraculous liquid for years to come.
But if you're going to an area where the water is not pure, consider the Berkey Water Filters. The Black Berkey Filters that ship with the Royal Berkey, or any other model, are able to filter out microscopic bacteria without removing the minerals beneficial to your health. Virtually no other filtration element can duplicate this performance.
How do you remove the differential circlips on a mk II clio?
I am working on a 1998 mk II renault clio, i found out that the speedo does not work so i removed the speed sensor from the gearbox and turned it by hand and it worked, so i now know its the drivegear in the gearbox/differential. I drained the fluid and removed the left hand driveshaft i found out to get to the gear i have to remove the circlip holding in the tripod joint cup but there are no surfaces for circlip pliers it seems solid and there are two small cuts about half way through the circlip a cm apart in a rectangle cut out, how do i remove it?
i doubt if your get an answer to that on here shaun, get a haynes manual for the car, it should explain in there how to remove it,good luck
