US Army Use Of Aimpoint Sights
Aimpoint introduced their first non occluded eye red dot sight in 1975 - it was also the first in the world. Aimpoint focused on the civilian hunting and target shooting markets for many years. Its first specifically military sight, the Aimpoint M2, took 25 years to surface but soon achieved widespread military adoption. It was this red dot sight that the US Army and US Air Force adopted as their first widely issued optical sight. The US Army type classified it the M68 CCO or Close Combat Optic. That was in 2000 and the 30mm tube CompM2 is still serving in large numbers but technology has moved on rapidly and it is starting to look a little archaic. Tube construction allowd the sight to fit any 30mm split ring mount, but this can lead to canting problems should the sight be rotated. The M2 uses N series batteries which are famously rare and expensive and 'only' gets 10,000 hours at one of its day settings out of one. This was fantastic at the time but has since been far exceeded, the CompM3 lasting 50,000 hours and the CompM4 80,000. Over half a million CompM2s have been purchased by the US Army and the sight is still in production. The CompM2s was subjected to very rigorous environmental, shock and vibration testing. It can be used underwater to 80ft (50 meters) and can endure a temperature range of (50°- +160° F) -45° - +71° C. As a result, M2s will be with us for decades.
By 2008 the US Army's M2s had seen six years of combat. The huge surge in optical sight adoption due to the Global War on Terror meant Aimpoint could afford to design their new sight from the ground up rather than adapting a civilian one again. The first thing they did was make the mount integral rather than use a separate rings, doing away with the potential canting problem. A robust, thumb-screw operated mount is included which locks the sight solidly to any Picatinny rail. The variety of mounts available for the entire Comp series is amazing, manufacturers offering mounts in different heights, lengths, bolt on, quick detach and flip to side configurations. The brightness controller was a weak point on the CompM2 and has been considerably beefed up on the CompM4. The N battery was replaced with the AA of which lithium and alkaline versions are equally suitable. Battery life was boosted to an incredible 80,000 hours. The US Army weren't happy with one aspect of the original CompM4 although many were purchased by individuals and units and often appear in photos from Afghanistan and Iraq. They were less concerned about operation of the brightness adjuster with mittens than getting it out of the way of bumps and knocks in a lower position. The resulting sight was the Aimpoint CompM4s which again was purchased in massivegigantic] quantities by the US Army from 2009 on.
By the time the CompM4s entered service the US Army had become fixated on getting the soldier's combat load down, or rather allowing him to carry more ammunition. The CompM4s weighs in at 11.8 ounces with its integrated, thumbscrew operated Picatinny mount. The US Army decided to combat evaluate the diminutive Aimpoint T1 - a unit that had never been intended for battle use. The Micro T-1 was originally intended for close range applications and has a 4 MoA dot rather than the 2 MoA on the CompM4 series. It can get an impressive 50,000 hours at a day setting from its CR2032 battery. There are fewer day and night settings than the CompM4 series. At only 3 ounces without a mount and 3.7 with one, the weight saving is significant. It is most often used in conjunction withthe 3XMag 3X magnifier to provide a versatile but light package capable of covering the likely engagement ranges with the M4 carbine and M16A4 rifle. Many of these sights are now in service and it may well become the new standard. However, the US Army is now putting Insight Technology MRS miniature red dot sights on its M150 ACOGs. Time will tell which, if either will become universal issue. T-1s will doubtless continue to be purchased privately in large numbers.
3T develop new aerobar for Cervelo P5 (Bike Radar)
**Cervélo's striking new ****P5**** and the tri-specific version's innovative
****Magura RT8 TT hydraulic rim brakes**** have earned the lion's share of the
attention so far but another key piece of the puzzle is a second joint
collaboration, this time with 3T. The Aduro integrated aerobars are exclusive
to Cervélo for now, but that will soon change.**
3T claims its new Aduro integrated aerobar to have the "lowest drag
coefficient of any aerobar available today". Part of that is obviously due to
the profiles of the setup's various cross-sections but also a bit of data
garnered from wind tunnel testing.
According to 3T, testing showed the lowest drag numbers when the carbon fiber
elbow pads were set either directly on the base bar or precisely 5 centimeters
above it — intermediate positions or offsets greater than five centimeters
increased drag, though it's unclear by how much.
_3T claims its new Aduro aerobar is the most aerodynamic setup currently on
the market_
Given that fixed offset, 3T built a one-piece V-shaped carbon fiber spacer
that's lighter and more structurally sound than multiple stacked aluminum
blocks. A bridge connects the extension bases for extra stiffness and,
naturally, cable routing is fully ...
