One Hot Product
Once the automobile was invented, it probably only took a day before toy cars were produced. Every boy, and even most girls, own at least one toy car. There are many famous toy cars out there but none rival Mattel's hot wheels. And if every little boy has a toy car, that one is a Hot Wheel.
Before 1967, if you wanted a toy car, Matchbox or Corgi were your only options. That was, until, Mattel created Hot Wheels. Since then they have become highly collectible, with people traveling all over the country in search of them and spending thousands to get them. One particularly rare car known as the Beach Bomb Back Loader recently went for $70,000 dollars. Would you have every thought a childhood toy could be worth that? If you need your own Hot Wheels try used cars Fresno for a huge selection you will love.
In 1968, the first set of sixteen different cars, often called the “sweet sixteen” hit the stores. They were an overnight success. Boys everywhere loved them. The cars looked cool and ran faster than their Matchbox counterparts due to a better wheel and axle assembly. In addition to the cars, you could buy sections of race tracks for your cars to run. Entire sets and themes of tracks were released. Among the accessories you could buy were jumps, loops and obsticle course, to name a few. The cars were run by good old fashioned gravity. Just place one end of the track on a table and let them go. One buyer bought a mint condition set of the 1970 Mongoose and Snake Drag Race team for over $500 dollars.
Part of the reason for Hot Wheels success is the extreme details they put into their production and design. Mattel hired actual auto indusrty car designers to create their Hot Wheels To be more precise, Mattel used the actual blueprints that the car companies use. Mattel has deals with General Motor, Ford, Chrysler, Ferrari, Mazda and even Toyoto. The car makers send their blue prints to Mattel, who study them intensively and create accurate 1:64 scale replicas of the cars. They then ship the blueprints back to the car makers. Hot Wheels has also created their own unique car designs over the years. Two of the more famous include the Twin Mill and Splittin’ Image, designed by the Hot Wheels legendary designer Ira Gifford. They have also come out with multiple series sets, some of the more notable of which are the Sizzlers, Treasure Hunt, and Pearl Driver series.
It is ironic that these miniture cars may have become more popular then the actual cars themselves.
