Wind Turbines Cost
In the 100 years or so since wind turbines were first used to produce electricity, they have seen countless alterations, resulting in more effective and versatile units. The best change, in the eye of the average consumer, involves the price tag. Each basic type of wind turbine, of which there are a few, has its own specific attributes and is suited to certain situations.
Since they were introduced about 1930, large-scale commercial wind generators have improved significantly. Enhanced blade design, more durable materials, and more efficient and reliable production are a few of the ways in which they’ve moved forward. This type of wind turbine is different from residential-use turbines in that it’s built from stronger and heavier materials, as it’s almost always intended to handle higher winds.
For that same reason, wind turbines of this class are usually used in areas that receive the highest winds, such as shorelines. Being “out of the way” like this makes it wasteful to have to repair them all the time, so it’s crucial that these units are especially reliable. All of these factors mean that commercial wind turbines, as one might expect, are the most expensive type, in many cases exceeding $100,000 in price.
Wind turbines for residential use have become more popular in recent years. Residential areas, due to the prevalence of buildings and other obstacles, often see frequent shifts in wind patterns, and this was a tricky problem for early residential-use turbines to solve.
Most of the initial residential-use wind turbines were too heavy to be used in many locations. They would almost always require special support structures, and they could only really generate much power from very strong winds. The cost of a tower or other support structure would usually push the total price of the turbine beyond the budget of homeowners.
The latest class of residential-use turbine to emerge is known as the micro turbine. These units generally don’t require the use of a support structure, as they are capable of generating good amounts of energy from even low winds. There are some micro turbines available now that can be mounted on the roof of a house. These smaller turbines are turning constantly, and this makes up for the fact that they don’t generate as much gross power as some of the larger turbines. Starting at about $600, these micro turbines are also affordable and are well within the range in which the electrical bill savings they provide will quickly justify their price
Wind turbines vary greatly in terms of their size and power, and the price tends to vary accordingly as well. It’s possible to reduce the cost even further by building your own wind turbine. All you need are some common tools and the right instructions, and just about anyone can put together a wind turbine, and get the lifelong savings that come with it.
