High Speed Thrills with Scalextric
Slot cars run on track using a slot to guide them and keep them on the model roadway. The name most commonly associated with slot car racing is, of course, Scalextric.
Slot car racing is a great hobby enjoyed by many people young and old. I'm sure that many people can remember the fun and thrills they had as children with their Scalextric sets. Scalextric first became available in the 1950s and the basic system hasn't really changed since that time. Old Scalextric cars from that early era are eagerly sought by slot car enthusiasts and good quality models can change hands for significant sums of money. It's even possible to run Scalextric cars from those early days on modern track without any modification.
Todays Scalextric systems have gone digital, like everything else. The basic original Scalextric system allowed two cars to run alongside one another on dedicated tracks however the new digital technology allows more than one car to run on the same track for cars to change lanes. These new and innovative features provide a whole new level of fun and enjoyment which has helped the hobby to develop considerably in recent years.
Although it was originally a British invention Scalextric now has a huge and enthusiastic following in the United States. Many popular US race meetings are included like the Indycar and NASCAR. One key factor that has helped to develop the popularity of Scalextric is that they actually encourage other manufacturers to produce slot cars and accessories for their systems. These days there are a variety of reputabel slot car manufacturers who produce some great cars suitable for Scalextric.
Another key aspect of Scalextric systems that make them appealing is that it is easy to start small and then expand. You can get a good starter system for as little as £40 ($70). Even the basic introductory system has everything you need to really enjoy the thrill of slot car racing.
There are many clubs for slot car racing enthusiasts where you can meet and learn from others who are keen on this engrossing hobby. There are slot car race meetings throughout the country, and around the world, throughout the year. Slot car enthusiasts often become involved in modifying their cars and optimising their motors, wheels and bearings for best performance.
Getting into slot car racing is eash with a low priced entry level system like the Scalextric Start Race Set. You will meet some very friendly and helpful fellow enthusiasts who will provide you with lots of advice and guidance and they're likely to challenge you to a race or two.

**Roddick** healing from tendon tear
**Andy Roddick **remains on track to return at the SAP Open in San Jose,
Calif., even though he says he hasn't hit a ball since hurting his right
hamstring in the second round of the Australian Open.
Roddick said on a conference call Thursday that an MRI exam showed a partial
tendon tear after he hurt the leg in a match against** Lleyton Hewitt** on Jan
19. Roddick, who turns 30 in August, was hurt in the second set and took a
medical timeout. He played 16 more games before retiring.
"It's a concern," Roddick said. "We've just been working on different types of
treatment trying to get it right. The MRI came back probably not as good as we
were hoping. I'm hoping to be hitting balls for the first time next Monday. …
If all goes well there, that should be plenty of time to be ready."
Roddick's first match in San Jose is scheduled for Feb. 15.
