Raised Flower Beds - Alternative Home Gardening Advice
For newbie's, raised flower beds might help you out if you have challenging soil, or if you have existing drainage troubles. They might also be created to be appealing as well as functional, and when strategically positioned, they can heighten the natural beauty of your garden, or direct the eyes off from a less coveted area.
Raised flower beds are not only for flowers as the name hints, instead they are an excellent way to raise herbs and vegetables as well. Most people - if you say raised flower beds - think of maybe a stepped flower bed, or something of that kind. In fact, raised flower beds can be almost any shape or design that you want. The type of material you use to build your raised flower beds might impose some restrictions on the designs you can accommodate.
While some raised flower beds might be costly in their making, because of the price of the materials required to fabricate them, there are numerous materials you can get around your dwelling to construct raised flower beds at a smaller cost. One outstanding instance of this that I have seen of late is an old claw foot bathing tub loaded with dirt and reformed into a raised flower bed. A lot of you can benefit from the fact that, it is actually possible to make a particular material to use rather than dirt in flower beds - the material is called Hypertufa.
Cedar is an excellent selection for making raised flower beds, and while it is attractive and durable, it's raised cost may exclude from some people's budgets. Several people create their raised flower beds from railway ties or pressure treated lumber materials. While a few people have brought up concerns as to the chemical substances used in preparing the wood, for a strict flower bed bulk people don't seem to care as you don't eat flowers. This could be a well-grounded concern if you want to utilize your raised bed for producing vegetables.
Now, of course, you could always choose to build a raised flower bed that is more unique. You could look around your home, or as mentioned earlier someone else's. You may be able to find many fetching materials to build your raised bed from. One that have been used rather successfully is decorative stone. Some people have gained success and uniqueness building with slate or plain old rock. Others have selected to apply bricks or blocks. Mortar can be needed with some of these materials, while others do well enough when simply being stacked.
PVC is the "new" material preferred by many for all their open-air constructing. It goes without saying that this includes raised flower beds. With a composition of plastic, it outlasts wood, with virtually no upkeep at all. One drawback to this is the limited number of options for color. Also it is quite likely that you would have to purchase special tools to be able to cut or assemble this material. It might not be the first choice for the private house owner planning to make their own raised flower bed.
While it is a usually recognized practice to confine the height of a raised flower bed to less than 18 inches, it is workable, with a lot of additional attention given to foundation and stableness, to make one of a greater height.
For the 16 - 18 inch bed bed, the layout is fairly simple. Once you have decided on the material and the design, start with digging a trench big enough to immerse a few inches of the material. This helps to firm the material to the ground, giving it the essential stableness. Some people prefer to secure their material in the trench, and there are several ways to accomplish this. For a enduring bed, you could use concrete, or you might use a big piece of steel rod. Simply bore a hole in the material, the same diameter as the rod, and drive the rod down through the material. Then proceed building up.

PITTSBURGH--Carnegie Mellon University's Gates Center for Computer Science and
Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies have been recognized as one
of nine projects worldwide to receive the 2012 American Institute of
Architects (AIA) Honor Award for Architecture, the profession's highest
recognition of works that exemplify excellence.
The Gates and Hillman centers, designed by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects
of Atlanta, have been home to four departments of Carnegie Mellon's School of
Computer Science since construction was completed in 2009. The buildings also
serve as a crossroads for the 143-acre campus, with five main entrances on
three levels and two major pedestrian bridges.
"These buildings are visually stunning, but this recognition by the AIA is
about more than just beauty," said Jared L. Cohon, Carnegie Mellon president.
"The Gates and Hillman centers occupy a key site on our campus and serve to
tie the community together as never before. Inside, their spaces foster our
culture of collaboration, innovation and hard work. The AIA jurors understood
this and we thank them for this award.
"We also want to thank our architects and all those who recognized those
needs, embodied them, and worked to create ...
